Decatur Club-50 YEARS!!! All Children Shall Have Shoes
2021 was the 50th year the Decatur Life Member Club has organized the All Children Shall Have Shoes event. 100 Decatur Public Schools students got a new pair of boots or shoes thanks to the AT&T Pioneers, retirees whose big annual project is to buy shoes for kids whose families might struggle to provide that necessity for them. The children also received socks, gloves and hats handmade by First Baptist Church’s Love That Looms ministry.
The AT&T iL Pioneers receive funding from the Life Member Council, donations from volunteers and received other donations to make the annual event happen, said project chairwoman Cecelia Hardnett. She was decked out in festive jingle bell earrings and necklace and clearly enjoying watching the kids pick out new shoes or boots, whichever the child wanted. Each child was able to spend up to $50 on their new shoes.
Great Job and hope the event can continue another 50 years!!

Illinois Chapter Literacy Project
Grover Cleveland School-Chicago

Illinois Chapter Literacy Project-Paula Baker (Life Member) had the pleasure of volunteering at the Grover Cleveland Elementary School in Irving Park Neighborhood. The school is in a historic building in Chicago. The school has been educating for 110 years. Grover Cleveland addresses the needs of the community offering a bilingual program for many of its students.
Paula read to a group of children excited to hear a story of two other children living in Africa’s Sudan. Mrs. Calbert’s 5th grade class and Paula began a journey with Salva and Nya (A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park), a story of hope and perseverance.
They spoke about taking care of our mental health. Paula shared her love of reading as a healthy coping skill during times of stress .She explained reading is a safe option to explore people and the world. We learned the meaning of SMART Goals, and decided reading was the smart goal of the day. The children listened eagerly, asked and answered questions, participating in a happy dialogue. Mid-way through the first chapter a child explained, “you know we can follow along if you place the book on the overhead project. Paula explained, she could do better and supply all with a book, a book light, and information.” The child gasped and cheered. Her peers join the celebration. Paula distributed the books to each child, teacher, and teacher assistant. The teachers followed along as two chapters were read. The reading was a joyful experience after a challenging year living in a pandemic. We are reminded of the simple joys such as sharing a conversation and the gift of learning.

Ronald McDonald House-SNACK SUPPORT 2021

Ronald McDonald House -Snack Support
Pioneers provides Snack Packs for family members who are temporarily staying at Ronald McDonald Houses in the Chicago land area. Snack Packs are a great grab-and go option for these families as they travel between appointments and don’t have time for a real meal. Also perfect for when spending long days in the hospital and want an alternative to vending machine snacks. Volunteers assembled kits including a variety of items including fruit cups, chips, granola bars and cheese crackers. They also filled blank note cards with encouraging messages that were also included in each kit.

Fisher House-Essential Kits 2021
On May 28, 2021 Carol Baker, Ivory Gwin and Sandra Franklin delivered “Essential Kits” to Fisher House located in Hines, IL. Fisher House is a temporary living facility for families of Veterans who are currently in the Hines VA Hospital. These families come from different states and Fisher House allows them to stay in the House so they can be close to their loved one. Fran Powers was one of the Project Leads for this virtual project. Fran along with her family, and 20 other AT&T Pioneers (both Active and Retired) volunteers, put together at least 5 essential kits each that included the following items: Toothpaste, Toothbrush, Dental Floss, Comb, Brush, Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash, Lotion, chewing gum, snacks, ink pen and a Word Search or Crossword Puzzle. AT&T VOLUNTEERS we SALUTE YOU! Thanks for taking time to virtually volunteer your time to do this project and show love to our Veterans. The manager at Fisher House was so surprised at the items in the bags and overly grateful for the 107 bags we delivered.
